Currently, sliding windows are the most widely chosen type on the market. However, aluminum-framed sliding windows with thermal breaks do have certain drawbacks: first, the two sashes cannot be opened simultaneously—maximum opening is limited to half of each sash, resulting in relatively poorer ventilation; and second, their sealing performance can sometimes be slightly inferior. Because the opening mechanism of sliding windows is limited to horizontal sliding motion, they are difficult to match with large-pane fixed glass units. As a result, they are generally more suitable for industrial buildings or rural residential structures featuring clear vertical and horizontal lines.
The cross-section of sliding and tilting window profiles is generally relatively large; logically, one would expect their wind-pressure resistance to be quite good. However, a slightly more detailed stress analysis reveals that the primary load-bearing components are often the middle sash sections, while the upper and lower mullions rely solely on pulleys to bear the horizontal wind loads. As a result, their wind-pressure resistance typically falls short of ideal performance. The water tightness of doors and windows depends on the sealing effectiveness of the opening parts. Casement windows usually employ rubber seals for sealing, whereas sliding windows typically use brush seals. In general, rubber seals provide superior sealing performance compared to brush seals.
