What are the materials used for steel-wood fire doors, and what are their characteristics? Fire-resistant doors and windows are well-known to everyone. They are one of the key fire-separation devices in building construction, playing an important role in reducing fire damage. Among the more common types of fire-resistant doors and windows is the steel-wood fire door. In our previous article, we introduced the characteristics of steel-wood fire doors. Now, let’s take a closer look at what materials are used to make these doors.

  What are the materials used for steel-wood fire doors, and what are their characteristics?

  Fire-resistant doors and windows are well-known to everyone—they are one of the key fire-protection components used in building construction, playing an important role in reducing fire damage. Among the more common types of fire-resistant doors and windows is the steel-wood fire door. In our previous article, we introduced the features of steel-wood fire doors. Now, let’s take a closer look at what materials are used to make these steel-wood fire doors.

  Wood-based fire-resistant panels primarily include mineral wool acoustic panels, fire-rated gypsum boards, silica powder boards, and vermiculite boards, each serving a variety of functions.

  1. Mineral wool acoustic panels, fire-resistant rockwool boards

  The primary insulation material used is rock wool and rock wool boards. These materials are inherently flame-retardant, heat-resistant, cost-effective, and lightweight. However, nowadays, most of these boards have been largely replaced by boards made with inorganic binders as the base material, with rock wool and glass fiber wool serving as reinforcing agents.

  2. Cement pressure board

  Concrete slabs are strong and widely used. They are commonly employed for fire-resistant ceiling finishes and partition walls. However, their fire resistance is relatively weak, making them prone to cracking and perforation in the event of a fire, which can compromise their protective function and thus limit their application to some extent. Plastic-concrete composites offer excellent thermal insulation and soundproofing performance at a cost-effective price, making them suitable for use as partition walls and roof panels.

  3. Plastic composite boards, silica powder boards, and vermiculite boards

  The hollow core slabs are made from low-alkali concrete as the raw material, with vitrified microspheres, glass microspheres, and ceramic pellets serving as aerated filling materials, combined with certain modified additives. These slabs boast advantages such as light weight, high strength, excellent flexibility, fire resistance, thermal insulation, and ease of construction. They can be widely used in various load-bearing areas of high-rise residential buildings, including interior walls, individual units, bathrooms, kitchens, communication ducts, and other similar applications.

  4. Fire-resistant gypsum board

  Since the fire resistance of plaster of Paris has been widely accepted, fire-resistant boards made from plaster of Paris have seen rapid development. These boards are primarily composed of flame-retardant materials rich in carboxyl groups, offering excellent fire performance. They can be used for partition walls, decorative ceilings, and roofing applications. Moreover, the raw materials for this material are abundant and readily available, facilitating factory-based, standardized production.

  When selecting steel-wood fire-rated doors, most people place great emphasis on their fire safety performance—after all, public awareness of safety precautions has been steadily increasing. Therefore, it’s crucial to clearly understand the materials used in steel-wood fire-rated doors and to make your selection based on your specific needs; only then can you achieve the best possible results.

  1. The exterior design is beautifully decorative and artistic.

  Steel-wood fire-rated door frames can be fitted with decorative trim and edge caps.   2. Economical and practical

  Steel-wood fire doors are cheaper than all-steel fire doors and are very similar in price to steel-wood fire doors. Moreover, the wooden door leaf itself is lighter than a steel leaf, making it easier to open and close. In areas where safety passages are frequently used, steel-frame hinges are more durable and long-lasting than wood-frame hinges.

  3. Easy installation

  Wood door hardware is typically installed on-site, whereas steel doors, under normal circumstances, are delivered from the factory with the frame and sash already assembled, thus reducing on-site installation costs. It’s simpler and more convenient to fix steel frames compared to wood frames.

  4. Strong scope of applicability

  Before applying putty during general civil construction work, steel frames are less likely to be damaged than wooden frames when installing fire-rated door frames. Moreover, in damp and humid areas such as basements and coastal regions, steel frames effectively prevent the common issue of picture frames absorbing moisture and becoming warped or deformed.
